Personal Background

The principles that have guided Fred Smith are grounded in his parent’s strong influence and his childhood experiences growing up at the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh, NC. His father was a teacher and coach there, and his mother served as a cottage “housemother.” As a child, Fred played football and baseball, delivered a morning newspaper route, and was active in athletics, church programs and the Boy Scouts. After graduating from Raleigh’s Broughton High School, Fred earned a football scholarship to attend Wake Forest University. Subsequently, he worked his way through Wake Forest Law School, graduating with honors in 1966.

After law school, Senator Smith served his country as a Captain in the United States Army JAG Corps for four years, spending two years in Virginia and two in Arkansas. In the years that followed, Fred Smith became a successful attorney, entrepreneur, farmer/cattleman and homebuilder. In 1982, Senator Smith served as president of the North Carolina Cattleman’s Association, and in 1989 he served as President of the Commercial Law League of America. Today, Senator Smith’s businesses provide over 600 jobs in Wake and Johnston Counties.

Fred is a committed father and husband to his five children and his wife Ginny. When he founded the Fred Smith Company in 1986, he dreamed of building a family business. Since 1991, Fred has been delighted to have his sons Jule, Duval, Reid, his daughter Heather and his sons-in-law David and Jake assume roles in the Fred Smith Company. The Smith family is also active in the First Baptist Church of Clayton, where Fred is a Sunday school teacher. The Smiths have a strong commitment to their community – often involving both their businesses and their individual interests.

Public Service

Now a member of the North Carolina Senate, Fred Smith was first elected to political office in 2000, serving on the Johnston County Commission where he earned the respect of both Republicans and Democrats who appreciated his work ethic and positive attitude. As a member of that body, Smith applied the principles he learned in business to fight tax increases, build new schools, and trim a million dollars of waste from the county budget.

Since assuming his office in the State Senate, Smith has worked to implement a positive agenda of increasing government efficiency, creating jobs, improving education, and protecting family values. And, in the 2007 session of the legislature, Senator Smith once again introduced legislation to create an Amendment to the state Constitution defending traditional marriage in NC. Senator Smith has also worked to control spending priorities with the Taxpayer Protection Act legislation he has introduced. Fred’s leadership has been applauded by conservatives across North Carolina.

In the North Carolina Senate, leaders of both parties have recognized Fred Smith’s leadership and commitment to finding real solutions to the challenges facing all North Carolinians. As our state continues to diversify, we can count on Fred Smith’s sound leadership to guide us in the future.
